Technology Tip: In Search of VPNs

For the past few weeks I've been thinking a lot about VPNs (Virtual Private Networks). Why do I need one? Because China censors the internet; this internet censorship is infamously called "The Great Firewall of China." VPNs basically allow you to establish network connections at another location, allowing you to bypass the Firewall.

1) "Why do YOU need a VPN?"
For myself, I would like to stay connected with friends and family back at home; I would like access to websites such as Facebook, Blogspot, and Google (gmail), which are all blocked in China. Youtube is also blocked, and all my music-teacher friends know how vital it is to have access to Youtube as a teaching tool! As a 21st century educator, I believe that the internet is a powerful tool to be utilized in learning.
2) "...Is it illegal?"
Nope! Hear more about it from this handsome expatriate gentleman:

3) "I'm going to China, and I want my netflix, youtube, and gmail! How do I sign up?"
Get one BEFORE heading to China, as the VPN home-pages are blocked there. Here's a list that I've collected from my searches - unless the Chinese government gets to them, these should all work.
  1. TunnelBear
    • (step 1) Download the app to your i-devices and laptop; (step 2) Switch it on within the app; (step 3) Enjoy browsing!
    • 500 MB free per month, or pay for unlimited access.
  2. Express VPN
    • Similar to TunnelBear, but seems more heavy duty from my general observation (TunnelBear currently has 13 other countries' servers to choose from; Express has 78!)
    • Costs twice as much per month (compared to TunnelBear)
  3. GoAgent:
    • Not quite a VPN, but it allows you to "gain access to blocked information" (wikipedia)
This list, put together by people who actually know what they're talking about, also looks promising - go and take a look!
Hope this is helpful! Now go and browse to your heart's content!
